Special Programs FAQ

  1. Do you accommodate special needs?
Yes! In addition to our weeklong camps, we also offer specialty programs for special needs students, including programs for visual and hearing impaired. For more information on our camps, please call 1-800-63-SPACE (1-800-637-7223).

  2. Who are the counselors?
Our counselors, known as Crew Trainers, come from all backgrounds and walks of life. While one year of college is required, many have completed their degrees. A background check is done on each Crew Trainer during the hiring process. Each Crew Trainer must complete an intensive training which includes instruction in curriculum, discipline and safety.

  3. Do you have medical staff on-site?
Yes, a registered nurse is on-site 24/7 for all weeklong, overnight camp programs.

  5. What hospital/ER do you go to in case of an emergency?
All emergencies go to Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children.

  6. How do counselors handle disciplinary issues?
Our Crew Trainers are trained to handle a variety of issues, and we generally have a three-strike policy. If a trainee (camper) misbehaves, he or she is sent to a member of management. If there is a third incident, a parent is called to pick up the child.

  7. How do you handle bullying?
Our Crew Trainers are trained to handle bullying issues. Any incident goes to management.

  8. What are the sleeping arrangements?
Trainees stay in dormitories called Habitats, which are set-up to resemble futuristic space stations. Placement in the Habitat is determined by availability. The rooms are similar to college housing and can hold anywhere from 7 to 40 trainees who sleep in bunk beds. A bottom bed may be requested for medical reasons such as sleepwalking. Crew Trainers are housed on the same hallway with the trainees, and they are always on-call in case of an emergency.

  9. How secure are the premises?
The camp property is gated with uniformed security guards present 24/7. Security cameras are located in key areas.

  10. How many others will be at the camp?
Trainees will be placed on a team with 12 – 16 others. They will be with that team the entire duration of camp. The total number of trainees depends on the camp and week.

  11. How many people are in charge?
The Crew Trainers have supervisors, who have assistant managers, who have managers, who have a director. In addition to this, we have several support staff Crew Trainers.
