Two local teachers have been selected for a scholarship to the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program.
Andrea Cole, a teacher at Highlands Elementary in Winter Springs, and Elizabeth Saul-Oakley from Riverside Elementary in Orlando, were among the 250 teachers chosen from around the world.
The program provides teachers with supplemental teaching techniques that they learn through astronaut training.
"Through the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy program, teachers are given a unique opportunity to become more effective educators," said Thomas Buckmaster, president of Honeywell Hometown Solutions. "This hands-on learning reinvigorates their lesson plans of science, technology, engineering and math education in classrooms around the globe and enhances their ability to inspire the next generation of leaders."
The six-day class is held at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., from June 15-28. Educators spend six days at the space center participating in jet simulations, flight dynamics programs, land and water survival training and scenario-based space missions.
To be selected for a scholarship, which each participant receives, the applicant must pass a rigorous selection process. The scholarship covers tuition for the program, airfare, meals, accommodation and program materials.
Since the program's inception, 1,448 teachers from over 40 countries and all 50 states have been chosen to participate in the Honeywell program.
