Nominations


Hall of Fame Categories and Criteria:

SPACE CAMP Alumnus:

A former graduate of any SPACE CAMP and/or AVIATION CHALLENGE program. The nominee must be at least 21 years of age, and must have graduated from their final program attendance at least five (5) years prior to the date of the annual induction ceremony. Nominees must be, or have been a credit to themselves and the SPACE CAMP programs, as well as distinguished him/her self in their chosen professional field. The nominee must have attended a 6-day or longer program at any SPACE CAMP and/or AVIATION CHALLENGE location domestically or international. The inductee may be either living or deceased.

SPACE CAMP Counselor/Staff:

A nominee must have been a member of the staff of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama for minimum of one (1) full season (three months), but that has retired or left employment at least three (3) years prior to the date of the annual induction ceremony. The nominee must have worked in a SPACE CAMP and/or AVIATION CHALLENGE program as a counselor or member of the Aerospace Management team, or worked in support of a SPACE CAMP and/or AVIATION CHALLENGE program. The nominee must have distinguished him/her self by demonstrating exceptional leadership, character, and achievement in his/her chosen professional field. The inductee may be living or deceased.

SPACE CAMP Friend:

Any person who has been a loyal and devoted supporter of SPACE CAMP and/or AVIATION CHALLENGE for a minimum of 5 years. The inductee may be either living or deceased.

Nominations:

Nominations for induction into the SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame must be submitted electronically on an official nomination form during the nomination period which generally runs from January through March. A nominee must meet the criteria for the category which they are being nominated in. Nominees that are eligible in more than one category must be nominated separately in each category for consideration.

SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Selection Committee:

A SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which shall exist within the structure of the U.S. Space & Rocket Foundation, will be appointed annually in April by the CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The committee shall be comprised of members of the SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame and friends of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The committee will have a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 13 members annually, and the majority of the committee must be Hall of Fame Members.

All Hall of Fame Members are eligible to serve on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee for a maximum of two (2) consecutive years. After serving two (2) consecutive years the Hall of Fame Member must step down from service on the Selection Committee for at least one (1) year before being eligible to serve again.

Friends of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center serving on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee could represent any of the following groups:

  • Alabama Space Science Exhibit Commission Member

  • Former Employee of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in good standing

  • SPACE CAMP and/or AVIATION CHALLENGE program alumni

  • Corporate/Private Partner

All friends of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center are eligible to serve on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee for a maximum of two (2) consecutive years. After serving two (2) consecutive years the friend must step down from service on the Selection Committee for at least one (1) year before being eligible to serve again.

A SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Selection Committee chair will be appointed annually in April by the CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The Chair of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee can either be a Hall of Fame Member or Friend of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The Chair appointment is eligible to serve for a maximum of three (3) consecutive years before the Chair must step down from service on the Selection Committee for at least one (1) year before being eligible to serve again.

SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Planning Committee

An internal U.S. Space & Rocket Center SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Planning Committee will be formed and appointed annually by the CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The planning committee shall be responsible for the following:

  • Final verification that all nominees meet the stated criteria for eligibility

  • Set the final ballot and coordinate the voting for the SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Selection Committee

  • Plan for the annual SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

The SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Planning Committee will use the criteria below to set the final ballot for each category:

  • There will be a maximum of fifteen (15) names on the final ballot for each of the three categories: Alumni, Staff, and Friend

  • If there are more than 15 verified nominees in a given category then the SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Planning Committee will review the nominations and reduce the overall number per category to no more than fifteen (15)

  • Nominees that were not selected from previous years nominations will automatically be eligible to be on the following years ballot as long as they received at least one vote during the previous years voting

  • Nominees that did not receive at least one vote from the previous years voting will have to be re-nominated to be considered in the future

  • Nominees that were not selected after appearing on the ballot for five (5) consecutive years will be ineligible to be on the ballot the following year and must be re-nominated, by a different nominator, to be considered in the future.

SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Voting and Election

Voting by the SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Selection Committee shall take place electronically approximately the third week of April.

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee members will have the following number of votes per ballot category:

  • 1-5 nominees - vote for a maximum of 2 nominees

  • 6-10 nominees - vote for a maximum of 3 nominees

  • 11-15 nominees - vote for a maximum of 4 nominees

Once the voting is completed the SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Planning Committee will verify the votes and determine the new class of SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame members according to the following criteria:

  • The nominees vote total must equal at least 51% of the voting members of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee

  • The nominees meeting the 51% criteria must place according to the following criteria to be elected:

    • Alumni:

      • 1-5 nominees - one (1) elected - highest number of votes

      • 6-10 nominees - two (2) elected - top two

      • 11-15 nominees - three (3) elected - top three

    • Staff:

      • 1-7 nominees - one (1) elected - highest number of votes

      • 8-15 nominees - two (2) elected - top two

    • Friend:

      • 1-7 nominees - one (1) elected - highest number of votes

      • 8-15 nominees - two(2) elected - top two

    The SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame Planning Committee will deliver the results to the CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center approximately the last week of April. Following this the CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will call each of the newly elected SPACE CAMP Hall of Fame members to notify them of their election.
