U.S. Space & Rocket Center® switches to winter schedule

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Alabama’s top tourist attraction will adopt a seasonal operating schedule during the winter months of 2009-2010.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama will close on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning November 30th. Normal 7-day operations will resume on March 1, 2010. SPACE CAMP®, along with other educational programs and special functions offered by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will not be affected by the temporary seasonal schedule.

“Mondays and Tuesdays have always been our slowest days of the week with regards to walk-in traffic,” according to Larry Capps, the Space Center’s CEO. He adds, “This will enable us to cut our overhead with the least possible impact on our guests.”

Capps says the new schedule will bring the Space Center more in line with other museums across the country who he says typically close one or two days a week during the off-season in an effort to control expenses. “In the early spring, we’ll go back to our 7-day per week schedule long before the tourist season begins,” he says.

The new schedule is limited to the museum and Spacedome IMAX® Theater. Space Camp, Aviation Challenge and all of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s educational programs are not affected. Catering, special functions and other activities are also exempt from the changes.
