USSRC Donates Computers to Triana Boys & Girls Club

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Imagine two dozen youngsters stepping off the school bus and standing in front of the charred remains of their community library, the building that had also housed the Boys & Girls Club. Until the fire, this had been where they went every afternoon to study, complete their homework, for tutoring and other programs.

The September 20th fire essentially destroyed the Triana Public Library, burning thousands of books and claiming a bank of computers that local children used daily to complete their school work.

“We’re well aware of the Boys & Girls Clubs, and the invaluable contributions they make in the lives of countless young people. Essentially, we share the same mission,” says Larry Capps, the CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. He adds, “So when our folks said we have the means to help, it was an easy decision to make.”

Capps says the Center’s Vice President of Domestic and International Licensing, Mike Kelly, came up with the idea after reading of the club’s plight. “We’ve been upgrading our computer equipment for about a year now, and had the equipment on-hand to replace what the Boys & Girls Club had lost,” Kelly says. He adds, “Our technicians have gone through the computers to make absolutely certain they’re all running like new.”

Capps pointed out the Space Center works with thousands of young people from across the world every year, trying to make a difference in their futures. He says it would be a shame to ignore the needs of children in our own back yard.

“No community has too many resources for its young people. We hope the Town of Triana is able to reopen its library and the Boys and Girls Club as soon as possible. We also hope our small gift will help speed that process along.”
