The Instrument Unit is the “brain” of the Saturn V, responsible for measuring the rocket’s attitude (direction the Saturn is pointing) and its rate of rotation, plus monitoring the status and calculating the deflection of the engines in order to steer the vehicle into Earth orbit, and later, out of that orbit in to a translunar trajectory. Arrayed around this twenty-two foot diameter ring are the Inertial Platform, the Rate Gyros, the Flight Control Computer, and the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer, all tied together to control the flight path.

This photograph was taken in the Davidson Center with a Canon SD550 digital camera, processed in Adobe Photoshop 7.0, printed on Kodak Royal paper, and framed with a black wooden frame.
