Apollo 1 is recognized by its emblem as the flight that never flew. During a pre-flight test, astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were all killed by a flash fire that broke out in their sealed space capsule. The spacecraft was redesigned, setting the space program back almost two years.
